Kakrapar dam is located in Kakrapar village, Surat district, and is built over the Tapi River. The dam was conceived in 1950, planning was completed, and construction began quickly. The dam was finished in 1954 after four years of concerted labour.
History
The Kakrapar Dam is the government’s most valuable gift to this region. Several complaints were made prior to independence to build a dam in this location since the water of the River Tapi created a tremendous disruption and tragedy in the adjacent villages of Mandvi Tehsil in Surat. The river’s water was inadequately regulated, and the Tapi River’s devastating hinterland experienced catastrophic flooding on a frequent basis. To control the flood, the region was studied, and the settlement of Kakrapar was designated for dam building. Construction began in 1950 and was completed in 1954. This dam was built to provide irrigation support to the surrounding communities as well as to prevent flooding from occurring on a regular basis.

The Kakrapar nuclear power plant is located in Gujarat. This power plant is expanded with additional nuclear reactor units, each having a capacity of 700MW. The Kakrapar nuclear power plant is owned and run by the Nuclear Power Corporation (NPCIL) of the state.
Project development and location
The Kakrapar nuclear power plant is located in the Vyara District of Gujarat, India, around 85 kilometres east of Surat. The two additional units are now under development on a 65-acre plot on the Moticher pond’s southern side, near the power station’s existing units.
In 2006, the Indian Ministry of Forests and Environment granted an environmental compliance certificate for units 3 and 4. The 1st pavement for unit 3 was laid in November 2010, while the second for unit 4 was placed in March 2011.
Natural uranium dioxide will be used as fuel in the reactors. The fuel package comprises 37 concentric rings of 495.3mm long rod bundles in cylindrical form. A moderator, a vault water system of calandria, and a primary cooling system surround 392 horizontal fuel channels in the fuel assembly.
The reactor architectural design includes a central barrier of prestressed cement concrete. It also has a supplementary reinforced cement concrete barrier. An emergency core cooling system (ECCS) allows for core temperature management in a catastrophic disaster. A PDHRS, which stands for passive decay heat removal system, assures central cooling amid power outages.
