Statement- Argument & Assumptions

RRB exam statement and assumption and arguments is a challenging part. Ace it with the help of these tips and questions on statements and assumptions.

Do you find statement-argument and assumptions questions on the General Intelligence and Reasoning section of various exams difficult? If so, don’t worry. In this blog post, we will provide you with tips and strategies that will help you ace these questions. We will start by discussing what statement and argument and assumptions questions are, and then move on to providing tips for solving them. So, without further ado, let’s get started!

What Are Statements and Assumptions?

Statement and assumptions are the questions that are statement based. The statement is a fact and the assumptions are those facts that can be inferred from a given statement.

The Statement is followed by two assumptions, one which can be true and one which can be false. In the figure given below, assumption P is true but Q can be false.

How to solve statement and assumption and argument and conclusion questions?

To solve statement and assumption and argument and conclusion questions, read the following points carefully.

In the statement-based questions, the statement is followed by two assumptions. You have to assume that if one assumption is valid then another can be invalid. For example, if the statement is true and one assumption is false then another can be valid.

In short, there will be four choices in which one statement is true and another assumption is valid. So, we can write like this:

Statement True + Assumption Valid (A)

Statement True + Assumption Invalid (B)

Statement False + Assumption Valid (C)

Statement False +Assumption Invalid (D)

Therefore, there is no chance of Statement True + Assumption Valid and Statement False +Assumption Invalid. For example, if the statement is true then the assumptions will be valid or invalid.

Next, let’s have a look at one example to understand it in a better way.

Here are some examples from add 247 statement and conclusion assumptions and arguments:

Statement: All men are mortal

Assumption: Some men are not mortals

Now, the given statement is true, so the assumption can be either valid or invalid.

If we think logically then it is an invalid statement as some men are not mortal because all men are mortal.

Therefore, the assumptions can be false as we think logically.

So, our answer will be option B.

What is the Difference Between Statement and Conclusion?

Statement: It is a fact

Conclusion: An inference is drawn from a statement

The conclusion is an inference that is drawn from a statement. The conclusion can be valid or invalid, but the statement is always a fact. In the statement, you have to find out whether a given statement is true or not.

For example:

Statement: All laptops are computers.

Conclusion: All computers are laptops.

Now, the statement is true but the conclusion can be either valid or invalid because you can’t say that all computers are laptops.

So, the statement is true but the conclusion can be invalid. So, your answer will be option A.

RRB exam general intelligence and reasoning statement arguments and assumptions are one of the major parts of the exam. There are different parts of statement and assumption questions. These have been discussed in the “Faqs” section of this blog

Tips for solving statement-argument & assumptions:

There are several tips and tricks to help in solving statements and assumptions and argument and conclusion questions. A few of them are mentioned below which will definitely assist you in solving statement-argument and statement-assumption questions:

– Understand the question: The most important step is to read and understand the question correctly. This will help in identifying what needs to be done to answer the statement-argument and statement-assumption question.

– Analyze statement: The statement must be analyzed properly in order to make a statement argument and statement-assumption question.

– Analyze Assumptions: It is essential to analyze the information given in the statement and then see if the statement can be true or false. If a statement is based on certain assumptions, it becomes important to analyze those assumptions and see if they hold ground.

– Draw a conclusion: After analyzing statements and assumptions, the next step is to draw a conclusion. The conclusion must be based on the statement and assumptions.

– Check the answer choices: The answer choices in statement-argument and statement-assumption questions are usually very tricky. So, it is important to check all the answer choices and eliminate the incorrect ones.

Following these tips will definitely help in solving statement-argument and statement-assumption questions with ease. Practice is the key to success in this topic, so make sure you practice as many statement-argument and statement-assumption questions as possible.

Statement and assumption and argument and conclusion questions

Here are some more examples of statement and assumption and argument and conclusion questions:

Example 1:

Statement: The medical council has decided that it would now allow only the doctors who have done their post-graduation to practice surgery.

Assumption: This decision by the medical council would improve the quality of surgery.

Argument: If more doctors are allowed to practice surgery, the quality of surgery would improve.

Conclusion: Therefore, the medical council’s decision to allow only post-graduate doctors to practice surgery is wrong.

  1. A) Both I and II follow
  2. B) Only assumption I is implicit
  3. C) Only conclusion II follows
  4. D) Neither I nor II follows

Solution: C) Only conclusion II follows

Explanation: All the points in this paragraph are related to each other and follow a logical sequence. The statement is the background information that states what the medical council has decided. It does not state any opinions about the quality of surgery or the decision. The assumption is a logical conclusion that can be drawn from the statement. The argument then states its own opinion about how the surgery would improve with more doctors. The conclusion is a logical deduction from the argument. It takes the opinion in the argument and applies it to the medical council’s decision.
