Neighbouring States Of Assam

Assam is a state in northeastern India and lies towards the south of the eastern Himalayas. The geographical area of Assam is 78,438 sq. km. The two native languages spoken in Assam are Assamese and Bodo.

Assam is an Indian state that lies in the northeast, situated in the direction of the south of the eastern Himalayas. Assam has an area of 78,438 sq. km. Towards the south of Assam, it shares its borders with Bangladesh and Mizoram. In the West, it has its borders aligned with West Bengal. Nagaland and Manipur are joined with Assam to the East. Lastly, Bhutan and Arunachal Pradesh have their borders to the North of Assam. 

Assamese silk and tea are known for their quality worldwide and attract tourists all year long. Assam is known to have the most rain throughout the year compared to other regions in India. 

Neighbouring states of Assam 

Many states share their borders with Assam in all directions. Assam lies in northeastern India. Assam has been in border disputes with four states: Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Mizoram, and Nagaland. The neighbouring states of Assam are as follows: 

Tripura 

Tripura is a state that lies in the northeast and is known to be the third smallest state in the whole country. The Manikya dynasty had ruled over Tripura for several centuries. Under British rule, Tripura became a separate princely state. Tripura has a geographical area of 10,491.69 sq. km. Assam borders Tripura to the East. The only national highway that connects Tripura to the rest of India is national highway 8. 

Arunachal Pradesh 

The state of Arunachal Pradesh is situated in northeastern India. The name translates to the land of dawn-lit mountains. It became a proper state on February 20, 1987. It was formed by the North-east Frontier Agency (NEFA) region. Arunachal Pradesh shares its borders with Assam in the south. Arunachal Pradesh’s capital is Itanagar. Arunachal Pradesh has the highest diversity of mammals and birds all over India. 

Mizoram 

Mizoram is a state that lies in northeastern India, neighbouring the seven sister states. The natives of Mizoram mainly originate from a diverse tribe culture. Mizoram neighbours Nagaland and Manipur. Aizawl is its capital city. Mizoram used to be a part of Assam until it separated in 1972. Mizoram is one of the union territories in India. Mizoram is known to be the second least populous state in India. 

Nagaland 

Nagaland is India’s one of the smallest states and is in northeastern India. Kohima is the capital city of Nagaland. Nagaland shares its borders with Assam to the West. The geographical area of Nagaland is 16,579 sq. km. On December 1, 1963, Nagaland became the 16th state of India. Agriculture is the main economic activity in Nagaland, along with tourism, forestry, etc. Various cottage industries contribute to the state from an economic standpoint. 

Manipur 

Manipur is a state situated in northeastern India. Assam borders Manipur and Nagaland in the West. Manipur was a province during the rule of the British empire. Manipur is known to introduce polo to the world. Imphal is the capital city of  Manipur. Manipur borders Nagaland to the North. The geographical area of Manipur is 22,327 sq. km. Manipur has held cultural and economic exchanges between countries for more than 2,500 years. 

West Bengal 

West Bengal lies in the eastern part of India. West Bengal is considered the fourth-largest state in terms of population and the fourteenth largest state in terms of the geographical area covered. West Bengal borders Assam and other states such as Sikkim, Odisha, etc. The majority of the population in West Bengal includes Bengali Hindus. It covers a geographical area of 88,752 sq. km. West Bengal borders Bhutan to the north. 

Meghalaya 

Meghalaya was formed by separating two Assamese hills, the united Khasi hills, the Jaintia Hills, and the Garo hills. Meghalaya became a legal state on January 21, 1972. Meghalaya is a state situated in northeastern India. During the British empire, Meghalaya was known as the ”Scotland of the East”. Shillong is the capital city of Meghalaya. Meghalaya receives the highest amount of rain in India. 

Bhutan 

Bhutan is officially known as the ”Kingdom of Bhutan” situated between India and China. A constitutional monarchy exists in Bhutan. Bhutan and Arunachal are neighbours to Assam, and Bhutan lies to the north of Assam. Bangladesh and Nepal are neighbouring countries to Bhutan, but they do not share a border with it. Thimphu is the capital city of Bhutan. Bhutan has been a member of the United Nations since 1971.
