List of Indian Navy Chief Admirals

The Indian Navy is the naval branch of the armed forces of India. It is one of three uniformed armed service branches along with the Indian Army and Indian Air Force.

About the Indian Navy?

The Indian Navy is an even and strong three-layered power, fit for working above, on and underneath the seas, proficiently protecting our public advantages. The Chief of the Naval Staff (CNS) practises functional and managerial control of the Indian Navy from the Integrated Headquarters of the Ministry of Defence (Navy). He is helped by the Vice Chief of the Naval Staff (VCNS) and three other Principal Staff Officers, in particular the Chief of Material (COM), the Chief of Personnel (COP) and  the Deputy Chief of the Naval Staff (DCNS).

The Navy has the accompanying three Commands, each heavily influenced by a Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief:-

  • The Eastern Naval Command

  • The Western Naval Command 

  • The Southern Naval Command

  • The Western and the Eastern Naval Commands are ‘Functional Commands’, and exercise command over activities in the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal individually.

Quick Insight About The Chief Of The Naval Staff

1-When India acquired Independence from British rule, the Navy Head was assigned as the Commander-in-Chief of the Royal Indian Navy. The title was again renamed as the Chief of the Naval Staff  on 21st June 1948.

2-On 26 January 1950, India turned into a republic and the Royal assignment was removed from the title. Chief of the Naval Staff and Commander-in-Chief was introduced as the new title.
