Countries and their National Games

National Games refers to the game or sport which is most popular and widely played in any country.

As it has been noted that sports and games which are widely played in a country are known as game nations, these games are also considered as National games. National games of any country are selected either on the basis of historical connection or on the basis of popularity in that country. 

National game

National games of any country reflect pride that is evoked in the health of countrymen. This is the core reason for the designation of any sport as the national game of any country. In India, field Hockey is designated as the national sport of the country. It is an ancient game which is played in the current world. Almost all countries in the world have a designated national game or game nation which shows countrymen pride and their beliefs. These games reflect the cultural value of any country in front of the whole world. 

Historical background of our national game

It has been noted that the national game of India is field hockey in which a ball is guided with the help of a stick. Current version of hockey is known as field hockey which was founded by the British in the 19th century. The first Indian hockey club was founded in Calcutta in the year of 1855. After establishing a hockey club in India in the year 1908 Bengal hockey team was designated as the first hockey association in India. For the first time in history, India competed in the Amsterdam Olympic Games in 1928.

This game was played till 2014 in two different halves of 35 minutes each. However, in 2014, certain changes were made in these rules and divided time into four halves of 15 minutes each. A break of 2 minutes is being provided after each half. These games consist of 11 players in which 10 players are on the field and one player is a goalkeeper. The standard size of hockey is about 150 to 200 cm. In 1925 India had its first international trip where it won 18 moves out of 21 and in the meantime, this trip is marked as the emergence of Dhyanchand. 

In the Amsterdam Olympics, which was the first-ever Olympics of the Indian Hockey team, it won a gold medal. Moreover, between 1928 and 1956 the Indian hockey team has won a total of six consecutive gold medals which enhances its popularity in the whole world. Furthermore, this team also won Olympic gold medals in the Tokyo Olympics 1964 and the Moscow Olympics in 1980. 

Contribution of national game in integration of world

As a game nation consists of cultural values, norms and popularity in the whole country, it contributes to the intervention of the whole world in various aspects. Every country has a specific game on a national game, which reflects countrymen benefits and cultural value, in between this, a collaboration between all countries and nations; games in specific events increase integrity. This leads to creating a sense of harmony in the whole world. As sports make a huge contribution in building positive social relationships, events such as the Olympics, Asian games provide a wider range of scope through which a country can be able showcase its culture and social value. Sports are a universal language that assists in bringing people together and sharing values that are beneficial to the world environment. For example, Japan’s national sport named sumo, an international event of Asian game and commonwealth games enables to compete with other country athlete and players which increase mutuality. On the other hand, players of other countries with defective sports integrated into events organised by international organisations minimises chances of conflict and increases a sense of harmony. Thus it can be said that the National Games is an important tool through which collaboration can be enhanced in the whole world. 

National game of some countries

Afghanistan 

Buzkashi is a game that is widely played in this country. It is also considered the national game of Afghanistan. This game is also known as Kopar, Kupari. 

Argentina

In Argentina, football is the most widely played game which is famous in this country. Thus, the widespread Game of this country is football. However, the national game of this country is Pato, which has been adopted since 1953.

Australia

In Australia, various games such as football, rugby, and horse riding are famous sports. However, cricket is the national game of this country. Selecting these sports as the national sport of this country because of its popularity and its connectivity to its sports history. 

Bangladesh 

In Bangladesh kabaddi is a national sport though cricket and football are very famous in the country. 

Bhutan 

Archery is the national sport of Bhutan due to its connection with history. Archery is a means of surviving during wartime, it also plays a significant role in their legends and myths. 

Brazil

The famous sport of Brazil is football which is widely played in the country. Brazil’s national sport is Capoeira which is a martial art.
