On 17th January 1972, the national flag of Bangladesh was officially approved. It is based on the same flag used at the time of the Bangladesh Liberation War in 1971.

Colours and symbols of the flag

  • The Bangladesh flag is composed of a dark green area with a balanced red disc in the centre.
  • The greenfield expresses the natural beauty of the land.
  • The disc represents the sun rising over the country, and the red colour denotes the blood of Bangladeshis shed in the war of independence.

  • The national flag of Bangladesh is rectangular, with a ratio of 10:6 in length to width. Depending on this ratio, the radius of the red disc could be 2 inches.
  • If the length of the flag is 10 inches, then the width of the flag should be 6 inches. The red disc displays slightly on the left when the circle emerges at the centre of the flag.

History of the national flag of Bangladesh

The initial design of the flag of Bangladesh was made during the Bangladesh Liberation War, when the country fought Pakistan for independence.

  • The original design, which was used in 1971 during the war, was different from the latter one.
  • The initial Bangladesh flags divided the green field and red disc of the present flag, and a yellow outline covered the borders in the centre of the disc.
  • In 1970, the first copy of the designed flag was made by students and political activists at a Bangladesh University.
