An overview of list of Prime Ministers in India

India's Prime Minister is in charge of the nation. Once a political party succeeds in a general election, the head of that political party is named the Indian Prime Minister and is appointed by the President.

The Indian President is the Chief of State. However, his powers are mainly ceremonial and notional. Our Prime Minister is in charge of the Government. After a significant party wins a general election and picks an applicant for the role, the President appoints him. Following it, the head of that national party is named the Prime Minister of India. The Prime Minister, elected by the dominant ruling coalition in the Lower House of Parliament or Lok Sabha and selected by the Indian President, has significant executive power.

Indian Prime Ministers

The Indian Prime minister is the Indian Government’s prominent executive. India, the world’s biggest democracy, features a comprehensive parliamentary system in which the Prime Minister serves as the leading executive. The President is the de jure Head of State. At the same time, their de facto executive duties are placed in our Prime Minister and associated Council of Ministers, as per the Constitution. The coalition with a vast majority in the Lok Sabha or party leader usually is the Prime Minister.

Our Prime Ministers are listed below with their party.

  1. Jawaharlal Nehru

Jawaharlal Nehru’s tenure was between 1947 and 1964. As our nation’s first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal governed for 17 years. It seems to be the highest tenure of any Indian Prime Minister. He was indeed a philosopher from the Indian National Congress Party who created the foundations of India’s democratic state. Unfortunately, in 1964, he died while in office.

2. Gulzari Lal Nanda

He was an acting Prime Minister from May to June 1964 and from 11 to 24 January 1966. Born in 1898, Lal Nanda was a devotee of Mahatma Gandhi’s cause. He seems to have been a long-time Congress Party member and occupied many positions in the Union Cabinet as a senior democratic leader. 

3. Lal Bahadur Shastri

Between 1964 to 1966, Lal Bahadur Shastri was the Prime Minister of India. Lal Bahadur Shastri was recognised for his tenacity during the 1965 Indo-Pakistan conflict. Hel seems to be from the Indian National Congress Party.

4. Indira Gandhi

Indira Gandhi, the firstborn and only kid of Jawaharlal Nehru, was born in 1917. Indira served as Indian Prime Minister from 1966 to 1977 and then in 1980 and 1984. She was the second-longest-serving Prime Minister behind her father, having served for 15 years in 2 terms. She seems to be from the Indian National Congress Party. After her killing in 1984, her child Rajiv Gandhi was appointed Prime Minister. 

5. Morarji Desai

Morarji Desai was our Prime Minister from 1977 to 1979. Morarji Desai, our nation’s first non-Congress Prime Minister, was a member of the Janata Party. He was a long-standing supporter of the Congress Party, functioning as Finance Minister until his resignation under Indira Gandhi’s administration.

6. Charan Singh

Charan Singh served as the Prime Minister from 1979 to 1980. Then, Charan Singh took charge of the Lok Dal for several years. Then, from 1977 to 1979, he served as the Janata regime’s deputy Prime Minister.

7. Rajiv Gandhi

Being from the Indian National Congress, Rajiv was the Indian Prime MInister between 1984 to 1989. Unfortunately, he was killed during an election season in Tamil Nadu in 1991.

8. Vishwanath Prathap Singh

He was a vital politician of the Janata Dal. He served the Janata Party administration as a Union minister from 1977 to 1980. Then, from 1989 to 1990, he was the Prime Minister of a coalition administration.

9. Chandra Shekhar Samavadi

Chandra Shekhar Samavadi was a communist and a member of the Parliament. From 1977 until 1981, he was the head of the socialist Janata Party and served as our Prime Minister from 1990 to 1991. 

10. P. V. Narasimha Rao

Rao served as our Prime Minister from 1991 to 1996. P. V. Narasimha Rao was Andhra Pradesh’s CM from 1971 to 1973, then a member of the Congress cabinet from 1980 to 1990, and then the Indian Prime Minister.

11. H. D. Deve Gowda

Former Karnataka CM and Janata Dal politician H. D. Deve Gowda was in charge between 1996 and 1997.

12. Inder K Gujral

From 1967 until 1976, Inder K. Gujral served in the Union Cabinet. Between 1997 and 1998, he was in charge as the Prime Minister.

13. Atal Bihari Vajpayee

Between 1998 and 1999, and from 1999 to 2004, Vajpayee was in charge. After that, he served in Parliament for the Jana Sangh and then the Bharatiya Janata Party.

14. Dr Manmohan Singh

The Father of Indian Reforms is one famous title for Dr. Manmohan Singh. It was for his position as the Finance Minister of the Congress Party during the 1991 financial development. From 2004 through 2014, he was our Prime Minister.

15. Narendra Damodardas Modi

The Republic of India Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, was chosen as the government leader. He is India’s fourteenth Prime Minister. Prime Minister Modi was initially elected to the 16th Lok Sabha in 2014. However, being from Bharatiya Janata Party, he is serving his second term.
