An Explanation on the Government of Mizoram

Mizoram is a North-Eastern state of India and is known as the land of mountains. In 1987, Mizoram was declared a state.

Mizoram, the land of mountains, is known for its diverse cultural festivals. The capital of Mizoram state is Aizawl City. Mi of Mizoram means people, zo means hills and Ram means country; hence, Mizoram is the country of people living in hills. Initially, Mizoram was known as the Lushai Hills District of Assam. The Government of Mizoram is like the government of all the other states of India. Similar to other states, the Government of Mizoram has a Governor, a Chief Minister, a council of ministers, and the Judiciary. 

Government of Mizoram

The head of the government is the Chief Minister, the Constitutional head is the Governor of the state, and the head of the judiciary is the Chief Justice of the High court.

  • Governor – The Governor of a state is equivalent to the President of a country. The Governor is appointed by the President of the country and selected by the central government for five years. The Governor appoints and selects the Chief Minister and his council of ministers for a particular state.
  • Legislature – Legislative assembly and Governor together make the legislature, regarded as the highest political body. A total of 40 members are part of the Legislative Assembly of Mizoram and are elected by the constituency.
  • Judiciary – Mizoram has two judicial districts, namely Aizawl Judicial District and Lunglei Judicial District. Different districts fall under these two categories. The high court of Assam has an Aizawl Bench in the Aizawl city of the state. The high court is known as the Gauhati High Court and has the power to take action and carry out hearings on behalf of the State of Mizoram.
  • The executive branch – The executive branch consists of the Governor, the Chief Minister and the council of ministers. The judiciary of the state is also a part of the executive branch.
  • Chief Minister- The Chief Minister, also known as Chief Executive, plays a crucial role in the executive duties of the state. The party receiving more than 50% of the votes gets the chance to decide the Chief Minister. Zoramthanga is the head of the government and is also the Chief Minister of the state. The chief minister is answerable to the Governor and reports to the Governor. 
  • Council of Ministers – It is also known as the cabinet of ministers; the ministers are answerable to the legislative assembly. The winning party and the Chief Minister forward the list of eligible candidates to the Governor of the State. 

Cabinet ministers or the council of ministers of the state

Cabinet ministers are a body of high-ranking government officials selected by the Chief Minister. Generally, cabinet ministers belong to the same party as the Chief Minister. Every Cabinet Minister is given some areas as their portfolio which they work on for the state. They are responsible for the day-to-day management of the government and assist the Chief Minister in decision-making. 

  • The current Chief Minister of Mizoram is Pu Zoramthanga. He manages the finance, public works, horticulture, and general and secretariat administration departments.
  • The Deputy Chief Minister is Pu Tawnluia; he looks after the public health engineering department, urban development and poverty alleviation department and animal husbandry and veterinary department.
  • Health and family welfare minister is Dr R. Lalthangliana.
  • Home, taxation and disaster management Minister is Pu Lalchamliana.
  • Power & electricity, arts and culture, land resources, soil and water conservation, district council and minority affairs minister is Pu R Lalzirliana.
  • Agriculture, water resources and co-operation department minister is Pu C Lalrinsanga.
  • Fisheries, food, civil services, and consumer affairs Minister is Pu K. Lalrinliana.
  • School education, labour, employment and skill development minister is Pu Lalchhandama Ralte.
  • Rural development, information, and public relation and land revenue and settlement department minister is Pu Lalruatkima.
  • Social welfare, excise, narcotics and sericulture department minister is Dr K. Beichhua.
  • The law and judicial, parliamentary affairs, transport, environment, forest and climate change department minister are Pu TJ. Lalnuntluanga.
  • The sports, youth services, tourism, information, and communication technology department minister is Pu Robert Romawia Royte.
