A Short Note on Indian Women Hockey Team Winning FIH Series Finals

There are several records of games similar to hockey in ancient countries like Egypt, Iran, and Ethiopia, but the modern hockey game originated in England during the 18th century.

Its first association was formed in the United Kingdom in 1876 and had given the game a set of rules. This association, however, got dissolved in 1882, and in 1886, it was resuscitated by a team of nine founding member clubs. Today, hockey has become a massive game across all continents and is played by men and women alike. The International Hockey Federation is the primary organising body for international hockey, and the FIH series is one of the most prestigious hockey tournaments in the world.

International Hockey Federation

The Fédération Internationale de Hockey or International Hockey Federation (FIH) is the hockey governing body founded by Paul Léautey following hockey’s omission from the 1924 Paris Games. Motivated by this rather cruel omission of the game at the Paris 1924 games, Paul saw the need for a governing body for this sport, which led to the formation of this federation. FIH has its headquarters in Lausanne, Switzerland. Its president is Dr. Narinder Dhruv Batra.

FIH Series

The FIH series is an international hockey competition launched in 2018 and organised by the International Hockey Federation. Aside from being played as a tournament, it also served as a qualifier tournament for the Olympics. It was played by men and women alike at the international level. However, FIH later decided to discontinue the series and replace it with men’s and women’s intercontinental cups, the new FIH series.

History of the Indian Women’s Hockey Team

An Asian hockey powerhouse, the Indian Women’s Hockey Team is known for their skill and determination. Their affiliation with the International Hockey Federation began in 1973. In 1974, the Indian Women’s Hockey Team made their international debut at the Women’s Hockey World Cup, finishing fourth.

When women’s hockey made its Olympic debut in 1980, India was one of the six nations to qualify for the Moscow Olympics’ maiden edition of the sport. The Indian women’s hockey team had an international breakthrough in the 1980 Olympic Games after finishing fourth in the tournament.

At the Asian Games in New Delhi, India, in 1982, the Indian Women’s Hockey Team earned their first international gold medal. When it comes to the Asian Games medals, they’ve won two silver medals (in 1998 and 2018) and three bronze medals (in 1986, 2006 and 2014). Additional accolades include a gold medal in the 2002 Commonwealth Games, two Asia Cup victories in 2004 and 2017 as well as a 2016 Asian Champions Trophy.

FIH Series and the Indian Women’s Hockey Team

So far, the Indian Women’s Hockey Team has had a fantastic run in the FIH series, winning many games and trophies. It performed spectacularly well when it beat its host, the Japan Women’s Hockey Team, by 3-1 to grab the award at the competition’s finals. The competition took place at the Hiroshima Hockey stadium. This emphatic victory at Hiroshima saw the Indian Women’s Hockey Team qualify for the Olympics in 2019.

The Indian Women’s Hockey Team has been one of the most outstanding women’s teams in the International Hockey Federation (FIH) series. It is likely to hold this position in the near future. Indian teams have undoubtedly been one of the top performers.

They are now rated 7th in the FIH World Rankings and are considered the best Asian team. They’ve won gold in the 2002 Commonwealth Games and the Asian Games in 1982 as well. Also, in 2004 and 2017, they won the Women’s Asia Cup. This year, they also triumphed in the Asian Champions Trophy. Despite reaching the Women’s Hockey Olympic semifinals for the first time ever at the 2020 Summer Olympics, India failed to win a medal after losing to Argentina in the semifinals and then to Great Britain in the bronze medal game.

Conclusion

The FIH series, an international hockey competition, was founded in 2018 to create an international-based hockey competition that would serve as a qualifier tournament for the Olympics. However, it was later changed to men’s and women’s intercontinental cups.

The success of the Indian Women’s Hockey Team in the hockey game cannot be overemphasised. After a tough few years at the initial stage, the Indian Women’s Hockey Team has gradually secured a strong position in the game. With their victory at the FIH series finals in Hiroshima, Japan, the Indian Women’s Hockey Team has proved to be one of the best hockey teams globally.
