Management can be defined as a set of activities that are carried out so that the resources of an organisation can be used efficiently towards the achievement of its goals. There are many inborn qualities that a leader has, which help him in directing and commanding the people of the organisation. Tracking of tasks is also an important part, which helps to know whether the organisation is going on the right path. Tracking the progress aids the manager to formulate new plans or make changes to the existing ones.

Functions of Management

The five functions of management include planning, organising, staffing, directing, and controlling. Planning helps determine the direction of the organisation, and it is focused on the future. The function of organising defines a set of activities that will be carried out in a certain manner and delegating these tasks to suitable personnel. The purpose of staffing means to hire as well as retain the right workforce for the organisation. The process of staffing includes recruiting suitable personnel, training them, providing necessary development, performing evaluations on employees, and motivating them and providing incentives to maintain the workforce.

Directing involves leading, communicating, motivating, and supervising the employees so they can execute the tasks efficiently to achieve the desired objectives. It also involves providing instructions and guidance regarding the procedures and methods to the subordinates. The controlling function makes sure that the activities go on as planned and they do not deviate from the pre-set plans.

Inefficiency in Management

Management is crucial for any organisation. When the management is ineffective, it cannot bring out the best in employees and hence lead to poor performance. Managers must know about activities that are important and those that are not. Focusing on trivial things would get the actual work delayed, and as a result, the project will not be finished on time. If the plans made by the manager do not specifically mention what to do, there will be a lot of confusion among the subordinates.

Inefficiencies are also managed on the part of staffing the personnel. If the right man is not recruited for the right job, he may be making errors which will cause problems for the organisation. The employees and workers must be properly skilled for the job that they are doing, and they must be provided with adequate training as deemed fit. Communication of goals and ideas is crucial within the organisation, but when there is ineffective communication, it will give rise to further confusion and stress. A lot of resources, time, and funds are lost because of inefficiencies.

Tracking

Tracking helps the managers keep track of the progress that the team is making. The manager can measure the productivity of the team members without any direct supervision. The purpose of tracking is to help the managers in managing the staff and resources and figure out the regions where some extra resources are required. Team members can also use tracking to measure the progress they are making; it can help in motivating them to complete their work swiftly. However, if the management is unable to keep track of the progress made, it would not know which area to give more attention to.

An organisation that ships documents or goods to its customers or clients use a tracking number so that its customers can track the shipment to know its status. Customers often stress over their packages about when they will reach them or where it is at a particular time. A tracking number may help recover a client’s lost package. The tracking number of packages helps in providing transparency to its customers.
