A brief note on the complete list of Nobel Prize winners in 2019

The Nobel Prize is a renowned prize that is given to those extraordinary people who during the prior year have contributed to benefit humanity; the award is given in six different categories. 

Physics, chemistry, physiology or medicine, literature, and peace are the six categories in which the Nobel Prize is given. The award is given to those prestigious personalities who have contributed the most to developing international peace, reducing standing armies and establishing support.  

In 1968, a sixth prize was added to the list category. It was the sixth award, also known as the Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Science.

Establishment of the Nobel Peace Prize

Alfred Nobel was a famous Swedish physicist who left most of his income to prizes in physics, chemistry, physiology, medicine, literature and peace. On November 27, 1895, he signed his last will and deed and donated most of his savings to form the award. 

Nobel was well known for inventing and creating dynamite. Born in Stockholm, Sweden, on October 21, 1833, he worked as a Swedish chemist, engineer and manufacturer. He was a multilingual man with a passion for poetry and play.

On December 10, 1901, the first Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to the most extraordinary people who have contributed to peace and humanity. 

The prizes have been given out 603 times, with the Prize in Economic Sciences being granted until February 2021. The medal was given to 962 people and 28 organisations in total. Some people have received the prize multiple times, totalling 930 people and 25 organisations.

Since 1901, the prize has been given to 57 women. Marie Curie became the first woman to win the Nobel Prize twice; she was the first to win twice.

The Nobel Laureates receive three items at the Nobel Prize ceremony: a Nobel diploma, a Nobel Medal, and a document certifying the amount. Famous Swedish and Norwegian artists designed the medals and certificates.

  1. Prize in Medicine or Physiology

In medicine, the Nobel Peace Prize of 2019 was awarded to Gregg Semenza, Peter Ratcliffe, William Kaeline Jr. The three laureates contributed to the discovery of how cells detect oxygen levels in the atmosphere and adapt to higher or lower quantities of molecules. This is the second time a major medical prize has been given to this field of study. 

  1. Prize in Chemistry

The Nobel Peace Prize for creating lithium-ion batteries was given to Akira Yoshino, M. Stanley Whittingham and John B. Goodenough. Each of the three academics, the University of Texas at Austin’s John Goodenough, Binghamton University’s Stanley Whittingham, and Meijo University’s Akira Yoshino, has made substantial contributions to the construction of the world’s most powerful battery.

  1. Prize in Physics

The 2019 Nobel Prize in Physics was awarded to Michel Mayor, professor at the University of Geneva and Didier Queloz, professor at the University of Cambridge and James Peeble for a theoretical breakthrough in physical cosmology and the discovery of an exoplanet.

  1. Prize in Literature

The Nobel Prize award of2018 in literature was postponed due to controversy, and the 2018 awards were given in 2019. The 2018 Nobel Prize was awarded to Olga Tokarczuk, a famous Polish novelist for narrative imagination, which represents the crossing of boundaries and living with encyclopaedic zeal. The 2019 Nobel Prize was awarded to Peter Handke, an Austrian novelist, for his exceptional work in literature. 

  1. Prize in Peace 

Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali has been given the Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts to create peace and international cooperation, particularly for his resolute move to resolve the border issue with Eritrea. 

  1. Prize in Economic Science 

In economic science, The Sveriges Riksbank Prize was awarded to economists Esther Duflo, Michael Kremer and Abhijit Banerjee for their approach to ease out global poverty.
