Unemployment is a condition that has been experienced by many people in the past and present. What makes it different from other forms of unemployment is that a lack of full-time work characterises it. 

In other words, it is the situation where somebody is looking for a job but cannot find one. The economic recession that started in 2008 has led to an increase in unemployed people. There are many types of unemployment. 

The leading causes of unemployment are the global economic slowdown, technological advancement, and the increasing use of automation.

What Is Unemployment?

Other types of unemployment include structural unemployment, which occurs when there is a mismatch between workers’ skills and the skills employers need. 

Cyclical unemployment occurs when an economic recession leads to a decline in overall demand for goods and services.  Seasonal unemployment occurs when businesses hire additional workers for short periods to meet increased demand (usually during the holiday season).

Types Of Unemployment in India

Structural unemployment is a type of unemployment not caused by cyclical fluctuations in the economy. Instead, it is due to a mismatch between the skills that unemployed workers have and the skills that employers are looking for.

• Cyclical Unemployment

Cyclical Unemployment is a term used to describe the situation in which a person experiences unemployment for a certain period, only to have it return periodically. Types of unemployment in India can be due to several reasons, including economic recession, technological change, or population growth.

• Frictional Unemployment

Frictional unemployment is a type of unemployment that results when people are temporarily out of work because they are between jobs. This type of unemployment is caused by the normal ebb and flow of the job market. 

When workers switch jobs, there is always some period where they are unemployed. This is frictional unemployment. 

Frictional unemployment is unavoidable and necessary for a healthy labour market. It allows workers to move to new jobs that better match their skills and desires. Unfortunately, frictional unemployment can be very frustrating for workers struggling to make ends meet.

• Structural Unemployment

Structural unemployment is a type of unemployment that occurs when a person cannot find a job that matches their skills and qualifications. This can be due to several factors, such as the decline of certain industries or the automation of specific jobs. 

Structural unemployment is often harder to fix than other types of unemployment and can usually require government intervention.

• Voluntary Unemployment

Voluntary unemployment is the choice to be unemployed, often for personal reasons. This type of unemployment is generally self-reported. 

People often choose to voluntarily leave their job for family reasons, such as to take care of a sick relative or to relocate closer to family. Other causes may include more flexible working arrangements, job dissatisfaction, or a desire to pursue other opportunities.

• Demand Deficient Unemployment

Demand deficient unemployment is a type of unemployment caused by a lack of aggregate demand in the economy. Businesses aren’t hiring because there isn’t enough demand for their products. This type of unemployment usually occurs during a recession when companies struggle and people aren’t buying as many goods and services.

What Causes Unemployment?

Unemployment can be caused by a variety of factors, including a lack of job opportunities, a decline in the number of jobs available, an increase in the number of people looking for work, or a mismatch between the skills required for a job and the skills of the workforce.
