The Modern Periodic Law

The periodic table is one of the fundamental bricks that is taught as an introduction to students when they start out with understanding higher levels of chemistry and physics. Let us see what the modern periodic law states.

The periodic table is one of the fundamental bricks that is taught as an introduction to students when they start out with understanding higher levels of chemistry and physics. In simple terms, the tabular form of storing information about elements occurring naturally or artificially is called the periodic table. According to the modern periodic law when with the help of atomic masses elements are arranged in an ascending order, repetition is seen in their chemical and physical properties.

Each new row of the periodic table denotes the start of a new period. Elements with similar properties start repeating after a certain while and these co;umns are called groups.

What is the periodic table?

The periodic table is one of the fundamental bricks that is taught as an introduction to students when they start out with understanding higher levels of chemistry and physics. In simple terms, the tabular form of storing information about elements occurring naturally or artificially is called the periodic table.

This tabulation is done according to the atomic numbers of the elements.

The name given to the rows is periods and the columns of the table are groups. Based upon certain trends, these elements are further classified into blocks. A Russian chemist going by the name Dmitri Mendeleev first proposed the periodic table and was also widely accepted.

What is Mendeleev’s periodic law?

Along with Dmitri Mendeleev another chemist by the name of Lothar Meyer also developed the periodic table for the first time. One similarity in both their tables was that they arranged the elements in tabular form according to their mass numbers.

Mendeleev’s periodic law states that the properties of elements; both chemical and physical, are based upon their atomic masses and occur repeatedly in periods.

Mendeleev had divided the elements into eight groups each represented by a roman number.

He also left gaps, so that undiscovered elements occurring in the future could occupy these.

What is the Moseley periodic table?

After the development of Mendeleev’s periodic law, Henry Moseley, a physicist came up with his own version of the periodic table which is now called the moseley periodic table.

The main problem with Mendeleev’s periodic law was that since it used atomic mass to figure out elemental positions due to which there were very large amounts of inconsistencies that used to take place.

Moseley solved these inconsistencies by developing the Moseley periodic table. Instead of using mass numbers or functions of molar mass Moseley used the atomic numbers of elements to decide their positions in the periodic table.

Moseley’s periodic table is also the modern periodic table.

What is the modern periodic law?

The moseley periodic table is what is known as the modern periodic table. As already mentioned in the previous section how the elements are arranged let us see what the modern periodic law states.

According to the modern periodic law when with the help of atomic masses elements are arranged in an ascending order, repetition is seen in their chemical and physical properties.

Each new row of the periodic table denotes the start of a new period. Elements with similar properties start repeating after a certain while and these co;umns are called groups.
