Answer: The centripetal force is indeed a net force that keeps an item moving in a circular motion.
It is critical to realise that centripetal force is only a term for the net force that causes an item to move inside a circular direction. Centripetal forces include the tension force inside the string of just a swinging tied ball as well as the gravitational pull that keeps a satellite in orbit. Individual forces can be engaged as much as these add up (through vector addition) to provide a net force towards centre of the circular route.
