Ans:– The motion of a child on a swing is called periodic motion. This is a type of motion which recurs after certain intervals of time. Since the child’s motion on a spring also occurs in regular intervals, it is termed periodic motion. 

Examples of periodic motions are:

  •  The motion of a pendulum
  • The vibration of a guitar string
  • The revolving of the Sun around the centre of the Galaxy
  • The rotation of the Earth over its axis
  •  The revolving of the Earth around the Sun
  • The motion of a spring
  • A rocking chair
  • A bouncing ball

There are two examples of periodic motion:

  • Motion of Swing
  • Motion of pendulum

Periodic motion can be defined as the motion in which an object moves a longer definite path in a recurrent pattern between certain intervals of time. It is a repeating and regular pattern of motion. Periodic motion occurs when the object moves continuously to and fro within regular time intervals. The main cause of this is the special forces on the body to create the specific movement. According to the law of inertia, a body moves in a straight line unless a post is by a special force, hence the special forces required to create the periodic motion. 

There are three similar characteristics of the periodic motion:

  • Period
  • Amplitude
  • Velocity

The mass and the force constant are the two factors responsible for affecting the periodic motion. The changes in these quantities will affect the frequency and period of the motion.
