Q. List the disadvantages of friction
Answer: Friction is a term in physics defined as a force that resists the sliding and rolling of one solid object over another. The traction is the frictional force that is needed to walk without slipping, which may be beneficial.
The disadvantages of Friction are as follows-
- Reduces efficiency of machines
The machines like engines inside the car have many parts and tools working inside them. These parts are generally in contact and in continuous motions regularly. This continuous motion causes the friction to generate and this hinders their free movement and hence decreases the overall efficiency of the machine.
- Produces unnecessary heat
Heat can sometimes be disadvantageous and friction is a necessary evil. The friction produced due to rubbing of dry trees or any fire incident in industries unwanted heat can be generated. This can be very dangerous and harmful to the ecosystem.
- Eco-hazard
The reduction in efficiency of the vehicles is caused by friction and this consumes more fuel. More utilization and additional fuel consumption cause environmental hazards and can deplete the natural resources.
- Causes wear and tear
Friction is the main reason for the reduction of the lifetime of an object. This is concerned with the economic problems. The objects can sustain for a very long time without friction if it is not acted upon by natural factors like heat or rain.
- Produces unwanted noise
The two main things that characterise friction are heat and noise. This noise can turn into pollution sometimes. The screeching sounds due to friction can lead to noise pollution.
