A Metre scale is used to measure _____?

When talking about the basic purpose of the metre scale, the metre scale is used to measure the length of an object with the SI unit of a metre (m). When measuring the length of an object, using the metre scale is one of the easiest and most direct methods.

Further few purposes where metre scale is used are:

  • To measure the height of an object.
  • To measure the distance between two objects.
  • To measure things.

There are seven fundamental physical quantities which can be measured i.e., length, mass, time, temperature, current, amount of substance and luminosity.  The metre scale is used to measure the magnitude of length.

For eg: The length of the box is 6 metres.

For the measurement of length, the distance between two points is taken into consideration using a metre scale in the case of the direct method. For precautions,  it has been stated that while measuring the length, the scale needs to be held straight with proper vision.

Also with the use of equations and formulas, smaller lengths such as micrometres and larger lengths such as kilometres and light-years can be measured and the method which is used is known as the indirect method.

What is a metre scale?

A metre scale is a one-metre long scale divided into 100 equal parts where each part corresponds to 1 centimetre. And when we look further into the depth of the markings on the scale, each centimetre is again divided into 10 equal parts where each part corresponds to 1 millimetre.

The minimum quantity which can be measured by the measurement scale is millimetres. Therefore, with this above statement, there comes a limitation to the measurement scale i.e., lengths smaller than 1 millimetre cannot be measured using a metre scale.

The Metre scale does not change the readings concerning change in temperature or time or any other physical quantity.
