Answer: Mathematics has its roots in ancient times, which were, well, ancient. This means that while we can speculate, we do not have evidence of the first application of mathematics. The early humans had to cope with the number, size, and form concepts daily. Choosing which berry to eat or whatever simple chore was the most labour-intensive and time-efficient.

We have artefacts from Africa that date back 20,000 years that show some of the first conceptual notions of time as proof of such early behaviours.
