Usually, the Englishman John Wallis is credited with inventing the number line to display numbers less than 0. Initially, he used a solid line to represent 0 and positive numbers, but a dotted line for negative ones.

A number line is a horizontal line that has points, equally spaced, that correspond to each of the whole numbers. The numbers are greater than those to the left and smaller than those to the right. Positive as well as negative integers can also be represented with a number line. Furthermore, on top of whole numbers and their opposites, you can display positive and negative fractions and decimals. Fractional numbers are placed between whole numbers at intervals that indicate how large the fraction is.

Comparing numbers can be made much easier by using a number line. Besides addition and subtraction, a number line can also be used to perform multiplication. The right movement is used for adding, the left movement is used for subtracting, and the skip count is used for multiplying.

A number line is important because it represents numbers in reality. Their main purpose was to enable negative numbers to be expressed in a meaningful way.
