Merits of Democracy

  1. A democratic government is considered a much more suitable government because it is more accountable and a stronger form of government.
  2. The quality or standard of decision-making is improved to a great extent in a democratic government.
  3. An appropriate method is provided by democracy to deal with the differences among people belonging from different backgrounds. Thus, this form of government promotes integrity among the people of the country.
  4. In the democratic form of government, the country can witness equality. The rich and literate people have the same standing in the eyes of law as the poor and less educated or illiterate people. 
  5. In a democratic form of government, people rule themselves in the country as the leaders are elected by the citizens. 

Demerits of Democracy:

  1. The democratic form of government is highly influenced by political competition and power play which further leaves no scope for morality in the country.
  2. Now that leaders that represent the country or state keep changing in democracy, the nation witnesses a higher degree of instability.
  3. When a decision is to be made by the leader, many people are to be consulted beforehand in the democracy which further leads to delays in the important decision-making process.
  4. Not knowing the best of the citizens of the country by the elected representatives leads to poor decision-making.
  5. Now that democracy is based on electoral competition, it leads to corruption to a great extent in the country.
