On April 13, 1919, a big mob assembled on the confined land of Jallianwalah Bagh. People had traveled there either to participate in the Baisakhi fair or to protest British policy in India. The acting Brigadier-General, General Dyer, barred all exits and ordered open fire on unarmed citizens, resulting in 379 deaths and 12,000 injuries.
People were unable to flee since all exits were shut. According to Dyer, his intention was to instruct the satyagrahis. This resulted in protests throughout India.
