The Constitution Assembly was established on December 6, 1946. On December 9, 1946, the inaugural gathering was placed in Delhi’s Constitution Hall. 

  • Sachchidananda Sinha was named acting President. Dr. Sachidanand was the first president of India’s Constituent Assembly
  • From 1910 until 1920, he served on the Imperial Legislative Council and the Indian Legislative Assembly
  • In 1921, he served as Deputy President of the Assembly. Rajendra Prasad was overwhelmingly elected President of the Constituent Assembly on December 11, 1946
  • Members of the Constituent Assembly were chosen indirectly by members of the pre-existing Provincial Assemblies
