Answer: Sukumar Sen, a prominent member of the Civil Services, served as the first Chief Election Commissioner. In March 1951, he was appointed CEC. He held the position of CEC from March 21 until December 19, 1958. In a Bengali Brahmin family, Sukumar Sen was born on January 2, 1899. His father, Akshay Sen, was a government servant. The oldest of the four siblings was Sukumar Sen. He attended Presidency College in Calcutta.
He subsequently moved to England to continue his studies at the University of London, where he received a gold medal in mathematics. He entered the civil service in 1921 and worked as a judge in several districts until becoming West Bengal’s chief secretary in 1947.
From there, he was appointed on deputation as India’s first chief election commissioner on March 21, 1950. Sukumar Sen also received the prestigious Padma Bhushan civilian award.
