What is the Difference between Exfoliation Domes and Exfoliated tors

Question: What is the difference between Exfoliation Domes and exfoliation Tors?

Answer: Physical weathering processes create exfoliation domes and tors.

Exfoliation domes are enormous, smooth, spherical domes that occur when rocks are unloaded and expand.

Exfoliated tors are smooth-surfaced, spherical rocks that range in size from small to large. Temperature fluctuations and expansion in rocks cause them to form.

The main points of difference between the two are:

Exfoliation Domes

Exfoliated Tors

  • Exfoliation domes are generated when rocks expand as a result of temperature changes
  • Exfoliated tors are created as a result of rock expansion and unloading
  • Exfoliation domes are large, smooth, spherical domes
  • Boulders with exfoliated tors range      in size from large to small
