What is the 97th amendment of the Indian constitution?

Answer: Cooperatives received constitutional status and protection in the 97th Amendment of 2011. Three constitutional changes were made in this regard:

  • It declared that the right to establish cooperatives is an essential right (Article 19)
  • It provided updated national policy guidelines to support cooperatives (Article 43B)
  • It amended the Constitution to include a new Part IX-B named “Cooperative societies” (Articles 243-ZH to 243-ZT)
