Question: What is Jamdani?
Answer: Jamdani is a fine, woven muslin textile with different figurative patterns produced throughout centuries in parts of Bangladesh. It is one of the most time-consuming and labour-intensive handlooms made of cotton which was referred to as muslin. It is the finest and most artistic textile by Bengali weavers. This art of weaving was included in the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage List 2013. Jamdani can be used for not only making sarees but also for handkerchiefs, scarves etc. It is the most costly textile by Dhaka handlooms due to the effort required in production. It was highly favoured and patronized by Mughal emperors but soon the industry started declining with the downfall of the Mughal Empire.
