Answer: With the same intention of supporting population control measures, the Lok Sabha and state legislature assembly’s seat adjustments were prohibited for 25 years (i.e., until 2026). The 84th Amendment Act was approved to postpone constituency delimitation until 2031.
The delimitation was frozen to provide the southern states, who controlled their population in the early 1970s, an advantage and to serve as a reminder to the other states of this.
Four delimitation acts were approved in 1952, 1962, 1972, and 2002, with a delimitation commission established in each case to determine constituency boundaries.
