Question: What is meant by Old Regime?
Answer: Before the Revolution of 1789, France’s society and institutions were known as the Old Regime. Under the previous administration, France was a monarchy. As a result, everyone was subject to the rule of the French monarchy as well as a member of an estate or province.
The monarch was not able to unilaterally impose taxes in France during the Old Regime.
It was necessary to convene the Estates-General, which would then vote on his new tax proposals.
An important political body to which all three estates delegated members were known as “Estates General.”
