Answer: Guls and Kuls are the terms used for channels built by the people living in hilly areas. They are built for irrigation. 

Guls and Kuls are diversion channels mostly used in the state of Himachal Pradesh. They require special care as their design and operation play a very important role. 

They release water when required and aid the agriculture of Himachal Pradesh. They were used traditionally to provide water to their crops. The water from the natural flowing streams called khuds is diverted to the irrigation channels in Himachal Pradesh. 

A kul irrigates an area of about 20 hectares, servicing up to thirty farmers at once.
