Duns refers to the longitudinal valley which lies between lesser Himalayas and the Shivaliks. The other name of Duns is Dims. Duns is used as a local word to represent valley, generally, it refers to an open valley. Longitudinal dunesform when the Indian plate and the Eurasian plate fall and form themselves between the Shivaliks and the Lesser Himalayas. Duns are established under the Himalayan River with coarse alluvium present in it.
Duns are narrow in shape and are generally made up of gravel and alluvial soil. These valleys are generally very large and they can be about 8-12 km wide and about 45-55 km long. These valleys are very rich in species of birds, more than 450 species of birds have been seen in that area along with the areas which surround the valley which are The Mussoorie Hills and the Rajaji National park. The reserved forest and the community forest which is located in that region are very rich in hardwood deciduous forest, which gives flowers and fruits and helps in Terai and Bhabar ecosystems.
As duns are made up of alluvial soil, it also supports farming and helps farmers to grow many crops over the surface. Some of the crops that grow over here are Rice, Maize, Tea, and many more. The local person of the valley also produces timber.

Dehra Dun is regarded as the largest Dun having length of about 35 to 45 kilometers and a width of about 22-25 kilometers. The persons who live in this Valliies are the Bhotias.
