Answer: An area of land that is completely surrounded by water is called an island. It is smaller than a continent. Islands can be found in oceans, lakes, rivers, or seas. A group of islands is known as an archipelago.
Classification Of Islands:
Oceanic islands- these islands rise to the surface from the floor of the oceans. Example: The Mariana Islands, the Aleutian Islands.
Continental islands- these islands are the unsubmerged parts of the continents that are completely surrounded by water on all sides. Example: Greenland, Madagascar.
