Write the balanced equation for the following chemical reactions: Sodium + Water →Sodium Hydroxide + Hydrogen

ANSWER:

The following is the balanced chemical equation showing the reaction of sodium metal with water.

The products of the reaction are sodium hydroxide and hydrogen gas.

2Na (s) + 2H2O(l) → 2NaOH (aq) + H2 (g) + heat

  • The above reaction is quite vigorous, as sodium (caustic soda, highly alkaline in nature) reacts violently with water
  • The product sodium hydroxide solution is colorless in nature
  • The reaction is accompanied by production of enormous heat, an exothermic reaction
  • The high amount of heat produced is highly potent to either ignite the hydrogen gas (producing orange flame) released or melt the unreacted metal
