Why do ionic compounds have high melting points?

Answer: Electrostatic forces referred to as ionic bonding hold the ionic compounds together. Ionic lattices are giant in case of ionic compounds and have strong electrostatic forces due to containing a huge number of ions. These strong forces need a stronger energy so as to overcome the forces of attraction and therefore the ionic compounds have high melting points.
