Why bleaching action of Chlorine is permanent while that of Sulphur Dioxide is temporary?

Answer: Bleaching is the process of removing naturally occurring and/or acquired colourants from raw textile material in order to decolorize it.

SO2 bleaches through reduction, whereas Cl2 bleaches by oxidation. Chlorine reacts with water to produce nascent oxygen, which acts as an oxidizer.

Cl2+H2O→2HCI+[O]

In the case of SO2, no such oxidising agent is shown.

SO2+H2O→H2SO3

As a result, the SO2 bleached product is reoxidized by air to its original state.
