Iodine is a chemical element with the symbol I and the atomic number 53. At typical conditions, it exists as a semi-lustrous, non-metallic solid that melts to form a deep violet liquid at 114°C. It is the heaviest of the stable halogens.
The ability of an atom to mix with other atoms is defined by its valency. The valency of an element represents the number of bonds that an atom can form to combine with another element (or compound).
