What is the Molar Mass of Potassium Permanganate

Answer: The molar mass of potassium permanganate is 158.034 g/mol.

The mass of one mole of a substance is known as a molar mass. units are grams/mole.

Molar mass of potassium permanganate:

The chemical formula of potassium permanganate –KMnO4

The atomic mass of potassium = 39.0983 g/mol

The atomic mass of manganese = 54.93804 g/mol

The atomic mass of oxygen = 15.999 g/mol

Molar mass of KMnO4  = ( 1 K) +( 1 Mn) + (4 O)

                          =[( 1 39.0983 ) + ( 1 54.93804 )  +(4 15.999)]g/mol

                          = 158.0339 g/mol

Preparation:

Commercial potassium permanganate is made by combining a solution of potassium hydroxide and powdered manganese oxide with oxidizing agents such as potassium chlorate. The mixture is cooked until it has evaporated, then heated in iron pans until it acquires a pasty consistency.

Structure :

Physical properties:

  • KMnO4  is a crystalline solid with a bright purple tint.
  • It has an unscented density of 2.70 g/mL and a melting point of 240 degrees Celsius.
  • It can be purchased as a powder, crystals, or tablets.

Chemical properties:

  • Acetone, water, pyridine, methanol, and acetic acid are all soluble in potassium permanganate. It’s also soluble in organic and inorganic solvents.
  • In concentrated solution, it has a purple color, whereas in dilute solution, it has a pink color.
  • It is not combustible, but it helps other things to burn.
  • It is a highly stable combination under normal conditions, but when heated, it decomposes into  MnO2 and releases oxygen.
  • Manganese dioxide , a strong oxidizing agent forms a dark brown coloured stain on everything organic. It accepts electrons from other compounds with ease.

Uses: Potassium permanganate is applied as a wet treatment to blistering or oozing pus wounds on the skin’s surface.

It can be used to treat bacterial and fungal skin illnesses that potassium permanganate can ai
