What is the Mechanism of adsorption?

The mechanism of adsorption occurs due to the particles of the adsorbent’s surface not matching with the environment particles within the bulk.

Answer: The mechanism of adsorption occurs due to the particles of the adsorbent’s surface not matching with the environment particles within the bulk. The particles inside the adsorbent are balanced due to the equal force among the particles. On the other hand, the particles on the surface are unbalanced because they are not surrounded on all sides by molecules and atoms of their kind. These forces are the factor behind attracting the adsorbate particles to the adsorbent’s surface.

The process of adsorption is directly proportional to the surface area per unit mass at a given temperature and pressure, hence, adsorption increases with the increase in the surface area per unit mass.
