Whenever a crystalline solid gets divided in two by a sharp knife, the freshly formed pieces appear plain & smooth.

• When it comes to amorphous solids:

Whenever an amorphous object is sliced with a sharp blade, it divides into two pieces, having uneven surfaces on the newly created pieces.
