What is a Universal Indicator?

A universal indicator is a mixture of pH indicator solutions that give different colours which can be used to determine a solution’s pH over a wide range of values. 

  • The pH scale is used to determine an acid or base’s acidity or basicity. The pH scale has a range of 0 to 14 on it. 
  • A universal indicator is a pH indicator made up of numerous chemical substances.
  •  Universal indicators have a variety of formulas, but the majority are based on a patented formula developed by Yamada in 1933.  
  • Thymol blue, methyl red, bromothymol blue, and phenolphthalein are frequent ingredients in a mixture of pH indicators.
