What is a node? What is an Antinode

Answer:

  • A node is a place on a standing wave where the amplitude is the smallest. The nodes at the ends of a vibrating guitar string, for example, are nodes. The guitarist alters the effective length of the vibrating string and thus the note played by shifting the position of the terminal node through frets.
  • An antinode, or point where the standing wave’s amplitude is at its maximum, is the polar opposite of a node. These appear in the middle of the nodes.
