What is a Homologous Series

Answer: A homologous series is a collection of molecules with comparable chemical characteristics and functional groups that differ by CH2 from one another. In organic molecules with the same general formula, carbon chains of various lengths have been discovered.

Some features of organic molecules in a homologous series:

  • The homologous series’ members all belong to the same functional group.
  • For all members, the general formula is the same.
  • Due to the same functional group, members have almost identical chemical characteristics.
  • Members all use the same broad method of preparation.
