What Is the Volume Strength of 1.5N H2O2 Solution?
Volume Strength
The term used to represent the concentration of hydrogen peroxide in the form of volume of oxygen that can decompose to generate water and oxygen gas is volume strength or percentage strength of hydrogen peroxide.
The decomposition reaction of hydrogen peroxide is as follows
Decomposition reactions are the breakdown of chemical species into simpler components. Typically, decomposition reactions necessitate the addition of energy.
2H2O2 2H2O + O2
Let’s calculate the volume strength of the hydrogen peroxide;
From the given,
Normality of hydrogen peroxide = 1.5
Molar mass of hydrogen peroxide = 34g
Equivalent weigth of hydrogen peroxide = 34/2 = 17g
Strength of H2O2 will be;
Strength of H2O2 = Normailty of solution Equivalent weight
= 1.5 17g
= 25.5 g
From the decomposition of reaction of hydrogen peroxide,
2 moles of H2O2 produce two moles of water;
At NTP the volume is 22.4 L
2 moles of H2O2 = 2 34 = 68 g
Hence,
68 g H2O2 22.4L
25.5g H2O2 ?
Therefore, the volume strength of 1.5N hydrogen peroxide solution is 8.4L.
