The chemical name of baking soda is Bicarbonate of soda. The chemical formula of baking soda is NaHCO3. Its IUPAC name is Sodium hydrogen carbonate. Another common name for Baking Soda is Sodium Bicarbonate. It was discovered by a French chemist named Nicolas Le Blanc in 1846, who determined that sodium bicarbonate is the active ingredient that makes dough rise when you bake it. 

Preparation of Baking Soda: 

The Baking Soda is prepared by a process called the Solvay process. In this process, Brine solution, Carbon dioxide, Ammonia and water are used as raw materials. The chemical reaction for the process is:

CO2 + H2O + NH3 + NaCl → NaHCO3 + NH4Cl

2 NaHCO3 → Na2CO3 + CO2 + H2O.
