Sulphur-

  • Sulphur is denoted by S and is a multivalent, tasteless, nonmetal and tasteless element. They also occur as sulphides and sulphate minerals. It is a pale yellow crystalline solid with the odour of rotten eggs. 

  • Molecular formula is S8 and the electronic configuration is 1s2 2s2 2p6 3s2 3p4 or [Ne] 3s2 3p4

  • Sulphur is obtained as a by-product after the production of natural gas, crude oil or metal sulphide ores refining.

Uses of sulphur-

It is used in preparing fertilizers, in manufacturing car batteries, used during mineral extraction, in water processing plants, etc.
