Wrought iron is the purest form of iron. It is the purest type of iron since it contains 0.12 to 0.25 percent carbon.

It is the most abundant element on Earth by mass, just ahead of oxygen (32.1 percent and 30.1 percent, respectively), and it makes up much of the planet’s outer and inner core. In the Earth’s crust, it is the fourth most prevalent element. 

It has an atomic mass of 55.85 and an atomic number of 26. It has a melting point of 1538 degrees Fahrenheit and a boiling point of 2862 degrees Fahrenheit. Iron has a density of 7.87 grammes per cubic centimeter

Types of Iron

There are four main types of iron that are:

  • Pure Iron: New iron that has been generated in an electric arc furnace at temperatures high enough to melt the iron is referred to as pure iron. The final substance, sometimes referred to as butter iron, is typically 99.8% pure, with a carbon percentage of around 0.005% and manganese content of around 0.005%.
  • Wrought Iron: Wrought iron is a form of iron with a low carbon content of less than 0.1 percent and impurities of less than 0.25 percent, such as Sulphur, phosphorus, silicon, and manganese.
  • Cast Iron: Cast iron is a term that refers to a group of ferrous alloys.The major ingredients of cast irons are iron, carbon (2 percent or higher), silicon (1 to 3 percent), minor elements (less than 0.1 percent), and alloying elements (less than 0.1 percent).
  • Pig Iron: Pig iron is a carbon-iron alloy that contains carbon, silicon, manganese, sulphur, phosphorus, and additional elements like titanium.
