Gel and sol are both distinct examples of certain kinds of colloidal liquids. In sol and gel, only the solid state and the liquid state are engaged in the processes of dispersion medium and dispersed phase, respectively. If we think of colloids as being analogous to solutions, then the dispersion medium would be analogous to a solvent, and the dispersed phase would be analogous to a solute.

Colloids may take on a variety of forms, including sol and gel. The term “dispersion media” refers to any kind of heterogeneous mixture that comprises particles that are spread out evenly over the medium. In general, the diameter of the particles that make up colloids ranges from 1 nm to 1000 nm. The classification of colloids occurs now based on a mixture of the many phases that are distributed and the media in which they are disseminated. 

Sol:

Sol is the name given to the colloidal system that results when solid particles of any kind are distributed in a medium consisting of a liquid phase.

Paints and cell fluids, for instance, both have colloids present that are referred to as sol. The paints that we use to color our homes contain microscopic particles that are suspended in the liquid phase; hence, we might refer to these paints as sol. In the same manner, cell fluids contain red blood cells, white blood cells, and other types of cells, which is why they are also termed sol.

Gel:

Gel is the name given to the type of colloid that results when liquid particles are suspended in a solid media to make a colloidal solution.

– To provide one illustration: Colloids that take the form of gels include cheese and jellies. Certain liquid particles are sometimes seen suspended in cheese’s solid composition, the majority of which is composed of fat.
