Carbon is a metal or nonmetal?
Nonmetal. Carbon is a solid element that is non metal in nature. There exist 3 allotropes of carbon. The three allotropes are diamond, fullerene and graphite. On the earth, diamond is the hardest substance that occurs naturally. Graphite, being an allotrope of carbon is also a non metal element. It is a nom metal substance that conducts electricity.
Catenation: Catenation is a property of carbon. It is often known as the self linking property of carbon.
The non metal elements are poor conductors of electricity. The non metal elements are soft and brittle in nature. These are ductile in nature. Upon owning the electrons the non metals get into the formation of covalent bonds with metals. These properties make them differ from metals.
The symbol of carbon is ‘C.’ In the 14th group of the periodic table the first member happens to be carbon. The atomic number of carbon happens to be six. The 14th group of the periodic table is also popularly known as the family of carbon. Carbon, the non metal is the list of one of the elements that are most abundant in the crust of the earth.
