Q. Write the full form of BOD.

Answer:- The amount of oxygen required by bacteria and other microorganisms while decomposing organic matter under aerobic (oxygen present) conditions at a specific temperature is referred to as biochemical oxygen demand (BOD).

One thing you won’t notice when looking at water in a lake is the lack of oxygen. Although we conceive of water as the polar opposite of air, it does contain modest amounts of oxygen in the form of dissolved oxygen in a lake or stream. Despite its small number (approximately ten molecules of oxygen per million of water), dissolved oxygen is an important component of natural water bodies; maintaining an adequate concentration of dissolved oxygen is key to the aquatic life and aesthetic beauty of streams.

Maintaining the aquatic life and aesthetic beauty of streams and lakes requires a suitable quantity of dissolved oxygen. Water-quality management requires determining how organic matter influences the concentration of dissolved oxygen (DO) in a stream or lake. Biochemical or chemical oxygen demand is a measurement of the decomposition of organic materials in water. The amount of oxidizable compounds in a water sample that can lower DO concentrations is measured by oxygen demand.

Certain environmental stresses (high summer temperatures) and human-induced variables (the addition of excessive fertilisers to a water body) can reduce the amount of dissolved oxygen in a water body, putting local aquatic life under duress. The measure of biochemical oxygen demand is one water analysis that is used to better understand the effect of bacteria and other microorganisms on the amount of oxygen they use as they degrade organic matter under aerobic (oxygen is present) conditions (BOD).

Water-quality management requires determining how organic matter influences the concentration of dissolved oxygen in a stream or lake. The amount of oxygen required to eliminate waste organic matter from water during the decomposition process by aerobic bacteria is measured by BOD (those bacteria that live only in an environment containing oxygen). The breakdown of waste organic stuff by living bacterial organisms that require oxygen to function stabilises or renders it unobjectionable.
