This scientific theory was first put together knowing the fact that cell is the basic structural and functional unit of life.   

The Classical Cell Theory was proposed by two biologists Schleiden and Schwann.

It stated that: 

• The cell is the fundamental unit of structure and function of living organism
• All living beings are made up of one or more cells

It was then expanded, in 1858, by another biologist Rudolf Virchow.

He added the following statement to it:

‘Omnis cellula e cellua’

It means that all cells are produced from their pre-existing cells.

All 3 of these statements together and form the modern cell theory.
