Answer: India has seen a rise in the production of rice in the past decade. It is the second-largest country producing rice in the world after China. It has a large area of land for the production of rice, good climate conditions and the right kind of soil to yield heavy produce. 

West Bengal is the largest producer of rice in India. More than half of its production land is used for the cultivation of rice. The state produced 15.75 million tonnes of rice in 2016.

West Bengal produces 2600 kg of rice for every hectare. Farmers produce rice in the lower Gangetic fields of Bardhaman, Midnapore and Birbhum. 

The production of rice requires more than 100-cm of rainfall and a 25 degree Celsius temperature. The state of West Bengal produces approximately 13.95% of the total rice production in the country. 

More than 40% of the Indian population consumes rice as a part of their staple diet. Cultivation of rice requires higher clay content and places with a coastal environment. 

The state of West Bengal lies in the eastern part of India where the Ganga river forms its delta. There is an abundance of water in the state which makes it an ideal place for the cultivation of rice. Aman, Boro and Aus are the rice crops that are produced in West Bengal.
